How to choose your lash style.

I will preface this post with - you have options and you can chance your mind often. Infact, keep changing until you find that one style that you just love more and more every time you look in the mirror.

For me, I keep changing between the "open-eye" and "cat-eye" styles. I love the sultryness of the cat-eye but then I just love the way the open-eye style makes my eyes look more alive. Honestly though, the style I love more and more every time I look at myself? It would be the open-eye style but I absolutely love the cat-eye so I just go between the two.

These are not the only styles you can chose from though. So let's explore them all so you have a better idea.

For this I want you to imagine the eyelid divided into 4 sections (when we work it's not always equal sections but for a simplified explanation I'm going to keep to equal sized sections. Just know that your lash artist will be a lot more specific and way more detailed in marking these sections)

So back to our sections. Let's say that section 1 is the 1st cm (centimeter) or so closest to the nose. 2 is the cm before the center of the pupil (or apex of the eye), 3 is the cm after the apex of the eye and 4 is the last cm (outer corner). These are rough centimeter so give or take.

Cat-eye: Also known as the "Wing". With this type we keep the lashes shorter across sections 1,2 and half of 3. Then we rapidly increase the lengths from there all the way to the end of section 4. This creates a seductive swoop that elongates the eye. But it can create a too "heavy" look so we generally advise not to go too long.

Open-eye: For this style we keep the long lashes in sections 2 and 3 to create height over the apex of the eye. Sections 1 and 4 we use shorter lashes. Very often most people's natural lashes follow this pattern.

Glamour: With this style we keep the same length of lash from halfway through section 2 all the way to section 4. This creates a little wing but nothing too obvious but still there. We will normally suggest this for someone who wants to try a wing or cat-eye but is still a little nervous. This way you will get an idea without the serious commitment.

Kitten: This style is a version of the cat-eye but it does something a little surprising and counter intuitive by making the lashes on the last 3-5mm outer corner of your eye slightly shorter. This will give you the cat eye look without dragging the eye down. This is excellent for those who love the cat-eye but have more down slanted or mature eyes.

Reverse kitten: This is used for someone with very wide set eyes. By moving the longer lashes towards the inner corner rather than the outer corner you "pull" the eyes closer. It is a very unusual style and not one done often or by many salons, mostly because it messes with our brains too 😂 but it can be done.

The lash industry is still very young and with all the new talent entering this field we are bound to expand on these styles in the future.

Talk to your lash artist about what your expectations are, remembering that it is not plastic surgery we can manipulate somethings but we are also limited to what we have to work with. If you don't have many natural lashes or very weak natural lashes we need to protect the health of your lashes otherwise you can have permanent damage and land up with even less over time. So keep your expectations realistic.

I will do a post about what to expect and link it here in the future.
